What You Will Learn
This class is thoughtfully designed to introduce students to the essential foundational skills of fondant cake decorating. By the end of the session, you will have hands-on experience with the following professional techniques:
You will learn how to apply a smooth, even crumb coat to your cake — the essential first layer of buttercream that seals in crumbs and creates the perfect base for a flawless fondant finish.
Applying the Final Buttercream Layer: Chef Dawn will guide you through the technique of applying a clean, polished final coat of buttercream, ensuring your cake surface is perfectly smooth and ready to receive the fondant.
Applying Fondant to the Cake: You will learn how to tint fondant if you wish to create a color for your handbag. You will learn how to properly roll, lift and drape fondant over your cake for a sleek, wrinkle-free finish—one of the most rewarding skills in cake decorating!
Fondant Impressions & Texturing: Using specialty tools and techniques, you will create elegant designer-inspired impressions and textures in the fondant that give your handbag cake its signature luxury look and feel.
Designer Details & Finishing Touches: From sculpted handles and hardware accents to refined finishing details, Chef Dawn will show you how to add the custom elements that transform your cake into a true couture masterpiece.
Every student will receive all ingredients, fondant, tools, and professional-grade equipment needed for the class— and of course, your very own beautifully decorated Designer Mini Handbag Cake to show off and enjoy! Cake boxes will be provided for you to take your creation home.

Chef Dawn Marie Alston of Ravy Cakes, LLC is a celebrated, award-winning Pastry Chef and culinary arts educator with a deep passion for teaching the art of baking and cake decorating to students of all ages and skill levels. A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native who grew up in Northern Virginia, Chef Dawn holds an Associate of Science degree in Culinary Arts with a concentration in Baking & Pastry from The Art Institute of Washington. She is also a Food Network competitor, having appeared on The Wedding Cake Championship, and takes great pride in coaching and mentoring her students — some of whom have gone on to compete on national television themselves. Whether you are a complete beginner or a home baker looking to level up your skills, Chef Dawn's warm, encouraging teaching style will make you feel right at home in the kitchen.

All The Details:
- Age Level: 13+
- Skill Level: Beginner
- All supplies and tools are provided for use during class.
- We will provide a box for you to take your cake home in
- The class may be a little messy so we recommend bringing an apron.
- If you have long hair, you may want to tie it back.
- Class requires a minimum of 4 students and there is a maxiumum of 8. In the event of insufficient enrollment, you will receive a full refund.
- Class will run approximately 3 hours. Please note that the class is hands-on and may run over or under schedule.
Cancellation Policy:
Changes and cancellations...we know life happens so we try our best to be flexible while being fair to our instructors who purchase supplies and bake for each student. Full refunds or credits are available for cancellations made at least 5 days prior to the class. If you need to cancel after 5 days but at least 48 hours in advance, we can offer you a credit for a future class. We cannot offer any credits for cancellations within 48 hours of the scheduled class.
